St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital Launches New Stroke Program for Active Adults

Stroke Program, “Your Journey Back to an Active Life,”
Designed to Enhance Continuum of Care for Young Stroke Survivors

AUSTIN, Texas — St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital and St. David’s Neuroscience & Spine Institute at St. David’s HealthCare recently launched a new stroke program for active adults called “Your Journey Back to an Active Life.” The program is designed to provide a complete continuum of care for stroke patients who survive a stroke at a young age. The program, which is associated with St. David’s Medical Center’s Comprehensive Stroke Center, is the only one of its kind in the state. It focuses on meeting the unique goals and rehabilitation needs of younger and active patients.

The rate of stroke is increasing significantly among people 40 to 60 years of age. Nationally, the incidence of stroke among younger patients has nearly doubled in the past 20 years.

“In addition to meeting the medical needs of stroke patients, it is also important to address their physical, social and psychological needs,” Robert Lee, M.D., medical director of stroke rehabilitation at St. David's Rehabilitation Hospital, said. “The new program is aimed at maximizing patients’ independence and helping them return to their communities where they can live productive and healthy lives.”

The new stroke program for active adults offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient treatment options focusing on achieving the highest level of independence and functional recovery, as well as an improved quality of life. As part of this program, an experienced, multidisciplinary team develops an individualized program designed to increase independence through mobility and self-care. The team primarily focuses on helping patients return to professional and recreational activities, as well as the challenges of a busy and active daily life. Special emphasis is placed on patient and family education and training.

The goals of the program are achieved by an integrated team of physicians, nurses and therapists specializing in physical, psychological, occupational and speech/cognitive rehabilitation that works together to meet the patient’s specific physical, cognitive, medical and emotional needs. It features inpatient rehabilitation, a neurological day program, aquatic therapy services and outpatient therapy services. A patient may be admitted to any part of the program based on the severity of illness and medical needs.

The program also includes:

  • Intense therapy by physical, occupational and speech therapists with advanced training in neurological treatment;
  • A computerized assistive device for “foot drop”;
  • Vision therapy for eye-hand coordination, response time and visual field deficits;
  • Vestibular and balance therapy provided by certified vestibular therapists;
  • Body weight-supported treadmill training;
  • Technology training for the use of a computer, iPad, iPhone or other electronic devices;
  • Behind-the-wheel driver training;
  • A return-to-work program;
  • Community reintegration;
  • Stroke prevention education;
  • Vocational, family, financial, psychology and intimacy counseling;
  • Neuropsychological testing;
  • A stroke support group;
  • A 6,000-Steps program;
  • And a family night.

Patients and families are strongly involved in establishing and achieving goals. As such, families are encouraged to attend treatment sessions so that they may learn to care for, support and encourage the patient on his or her path to healing.
