AUSTIN, Texas—On November 9, St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital and Easter Seals Central Texas will open a new center designed to provide better health and wellness resources for people with disabilities through a unique community collaboration. The St. David’s Wheelchair Fitness Center will relocate from its current location in the Hancock Center to Easter Seals Central Texas’ new site, located at 8505 Cross Park Drive, Suite 120, in Austin. The new center, which will be renamed The Fit Ability Program, will be part of Easter Seals Central Texas’ new Lifelong Improvement through Fitness and Education (LIFE) Center, a fitness community for the disabled population.
“The St. David’s Wheelchair Fitness Center has served as a tremendous resource for our patients for many years,” Juan Latorre, M.D., medical director of the Spinal Cord Injury and Amputee Program at St. David's Rehabilitation Hospital, said. “We are hoping to see this program evolve under the guidance of Easter Seals Central Texas in order to continue to meet the unique needs of disabled patients.”
The Fit Ability Program will be housed in a significantly larger space, and it will offer enhanced resources to its members, including wheelchair-accessible fitness equipment and a certified fitness specialist. Additionally, members using The Fit Ability Program will have access to other services in the LIFE Center, including the Spinal and Neuro Recovery Program, as well as access to other Easter Seals Central Texas programs and services.
“People with disabilities face different challenges at varying stages of their lives, and it’s important to not only identify those needs, but also to create new ways to meet them,” Denise White, chief development officer of Easter Seals Central Texas, said. “The Fit Ability Program will play a key role in enhancing the health and wellness of the disabled population.”
The center, which has been operated by St. David’s Medical Center for more than two decades, will be transitioned to Easter Seals Central Texas. All of the equipment, as well as the staff member who runs the center, will be managed by Easter Seals Central Texas. Additionally, St. David’s Medical Center will provide Easter Seals Central Texas with more than $100,000 per year, for three years, as a gift to aid during the transition, as the center becomes a fully funded program of Easter Seals Central Texas. St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital will continue to play a collaborative role by helping to identify opportunities for lifelong improvement for health and wellness for people with disabilities.
The current center will close on Nov. 6, 2015, and it will reopen in its new location in the LIFE Center on Nov. 9, 2015. The new center is easily accessible via public transportation.
