Adaptive Driving Program

The St. David's Rehabilitation Hospital Adaptive Driving Program is the only one of its kind in Central Texas. Because driving is an important part of maintaining independence, the program promotes self-reliance through medically-based driver evaluation and training.

The Adaptive Driving Program benefits individuals who have:

• Stroke
• Brain injury
• Spinal cord injury
• Amputation
• Cognitive impairment
• Congenital abnormality
• Orthopedic or neurological impairments
• Age-related changes, including visual and cognitive challenges

The program provides an objective and standardized method for determining your ability to drive and use adaptive equipment, as well as willingness to enhance behind-the-wheel safety.

A registered occupational therapist provides evaluation and training.

The program includes a comprehensive evaluation that determines the ability to drive. The evaluation process consists of clinical assessments of driving skills that include:

• Vision
• Strength
• Balance
• Cognition
• Decision-making
• Reaction time

A behind-the-wheel assessment using St. David's Adaptive Driving vehicle evaluates:

• Vehicle operation
• Decision-making
• Scanning
• Safety with transfers
• Proficiency with adaptive equipment
• Compensatory strategies

Driver training may be recommended to improve driving skills, train for use of adaptive equipment, address overall safety in a variety of traffic situations, or to determine safety with a restricted driving status.

A physician's referral and a valid driver's license or permit are required.
